The Online and Distance Education Test Center, located in Keathley University Center (KUC), Room 107, provides testing services for MTSU graduating seniors and students enrolled in distance learning courses, including online and hybrid courses.

If a student is unable to attend a scheduled online course exam because of extenuating circumstances, the exam may be taken at the Distance Education Test Center on an alternate date and/or time, subject to instructor approval.

The Test Center operates on limited hours and is staffed part-time. Early scheduling is encouraged. Testing is by appointment only, and a valid photo ID is required.

Cell phones are not permitted in the Test Center. Lockers are available for personal belongings.

DSST Exams

The DSST is a credit-by examination process which gives students an opportunity to earn college credit for prior learning experience. All DSST exams are computer based with the exception of Principles of Public Speaking which is not offered at MTSU. For a list of offered exams, visit the DSST web site.

The link to schedule an exam is on our DSST information page. Please read over all information before scheduling an appointment. Students who wish to have their test scores automatically sent to MTSU need to enter the college code, 8829, at the time of testing.

Microsoft Testing

MOS exams certify proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.).

Procedures for Scheduling a Distance Education Exam with an Off-Campus Proctor

Students who live 50 miles or more from the MTSU campus may take their distance education exams with an approved off-campus proctor.

Submit the below form for distance education courses that require proctored exams. If you choose to test at an approved off-campus location, the testing site may charge a proctoring fee.

Please note: Off-campus testing is permitted only at a testing center located on a college or university campus. Employers are no longer approved as proctors. Exceptions may be made for active-duty military service members or for students who live more than 50 miles from the nearest institution of higher education.

If you have questions about whether your proposed testing location is eligible, please email testingcenter@mtsu.edu with the name and website of the testing center, as well as the name, phone number, and email address of your proposed proctor.

Scheduling Your Exam

1. Contact the testing center where you plan to test and arrange a mutually convenient date and time for your exam.
2. Obtain the proctor’s:
   • Phone number
   • Email address
3. Complete the request form below with the required information.

Important: Off-campus students must complete their exam by 11:00 a.m. CT on the last scheduled day of the on-campus exam period, unless the instructor provides written approval for a later testing time. Approval must be sent directly by the instructor to testingcenter@mtsu.edu.

Once we receive your request, we will verify the legitimacy of your proposed testing center and coordinate exam delivery directly with the approved proctor at no charge to you. Please note that while MTSU does not charge for this service, the off-campus testing center may assess its own proctoring fee.

Submission Deadline

Your request must be submitted at least two weeks before the date you wish to take your exam.

Requests received with less than two weeks’ notice cannot be guaranteed. In those cases, you will need to either:

• Obtain written permission from your instructor to test after the regular deadline, or
• Make arrangements to take the exam on the MTSU campus within the exam window.

After your request has been received, your test site and proctor vetted, and all required approvals have been obtained, Testing Services will coordinate the delivery of your exam with the approved off-campus proctor.

Additional Resources

Parking Permits 

Please visit Parking Services, located at 205 City View Drive, to obtain your parking permit. You will need to present a valid photo ID, your M number, and your vehicle’s license plate number.

Visitors may also apply online for a parking permit through the Parking Services website.

The test center is located in the Keathly University Center room 108 (enter via room 107). Use “1524 Military Memorial” for your GPS.

Special Accommodations
Students requiring special accommodations should be registered with Disability and Access Center (DAC) at MTSU. If you have already done so and will need accommodations at the Distance Education Test Center, please contact the test center at least one week ahead of your scheduled test date at (615) 898-2743 or email us at testingcenter@mtsu.edu. The Distance Education Test Center may not be able to accommodate every request.  If not, students will be referred to the DAC for an alternate testing location.
